He Hates Me by Isabella Starling and Rina Kent—But Do I Hate It?
I buddy read He Hates Me with @quillsandpages , and let’s just say—we had thoughts (and a lot of "OMG" moments over the spice)! 🔥📖
So, He Hates Me is one of those dark romance books that leans heavily into the whole "obsessive stalker, morally gray antihero" trope. And honestly? It does exactly what it's meant to do—give you a broody, dangerous hero and a heroine who can't seem to stay away. The plot? Minimal to Moderate. The spice? Maxed out.
What Worked:
🔥 The spice was definitely spicing. If you're in it for the tension, the intensity, and the "I should not want this but I do" energy, then this book delivers. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and their dynamic has that addictive push-and-pull quality that keeps you turning pages.
🖤 The dark themes were committed to. If you like your heroes unhinged and possessive, you're in for a ride.
✍️ The writing was decent. It wasn’t overly flowery or too simplistic—it got the job done, setting the mood and keeping the pacing tight.
What Didn't Work:
❌ Thin plot, heavy vibes. If you're looking for deep character development or intricate storytelling, this ain’t it. The story mainly revolves around the obsessive relationship, and everything else feels secondary.
❌ Consent is... questionable. If you like your dark romance with a clear line of "this is toxic but sexy," you might be fine, but if blurred boundaries bother you, some moments might not sit well.
❌ Heroine could’ve had more personality. She’s mostly just there—reacting to him, feeling drawn to him, but not really standing out much on her own.
Final Thoughts:
If you love dark, obsessive romances where the hero is one step away from full-blown villain, then He Hates Me scratches that itch. Just don’t expect a complex plot or a heroine with a ton of depth. But if all you care about is the spice and the intense, dangerous attraction? Then yeah, the spice was definitely spicing. 🌶️🔥
⭐ Rating: 3.5/5 (Would be a 5 if we were rating purely on spice!)
